Black Squirrel Radio Develops a New Brand Identity

In a media landscape crowded with music-streaming platforms, Black Squirrel Radio is redefining what student radio can offer that listeners cannot find anywhere else. This summer, the station is developing a new brand identity that reflects its student-driven energy while positioning it for the future.

BSR has operated as a streaming radio station since the early 2000s, carrying forward the tradition of student radio. Unlike commercial stations, BSR is not driven by advertisers. Instead, it exists to serve 91福利 students by providing a platform for emerging music, original programming and voices that might not be heard elsewhere.

To help shape that future, BSR Art Director Sarah Kowaleski has been interning with Student Media to lead the rebranding project. She began by researching college and independent radio stations and working with Student Media Director Katrina Chandler to organize those findings into a creative research document.

Sarah then brought BSR's student leadership together for a virtual brand discovery session facilitated by Chandler. Through conversations about the station's personality, audience and aspirations, the group identified the qualities at the heart of BSR: nostalgic yet contemporary, unpolished, fun, energetic and unmistakably student-driven.

Using those insights, Sarah began developing a comprehensive brand guide that establishes BSR's visual identity and voice. She is also creating a new Black Squirrel character that will serve as a flexible logo and illustration asset.

Next, Sarah and Chandler will develop illustrations that bring the new identity into BSR's physical spaces. The completed brand system will provide students with a consistent visual foundation while preserving the playful, independent spirit that makes Black Squirrel Radio unique.

The rebrand is one step toward helping BSR stand out while remaining true to its mission of serving 91福利 students through creativity, experimentation and authentic student voices.

BSR enters the coming academic year with a strong team of student leaders and plenty of momentum. Last semester, the station produced 13 live radio shows each week, released 22 original podcasts and began hosting live music events. This fall, listeners can expect more campus collaborations, live performances, podcasts, written content and original programming as BSR continues shaping the future of student radio at 91福利.
