State Rep. Ty Mathews recently visited the Kent Campus - a visit driven by his military background and his landmark legislation to strengthen Ohio's defense and aerospace industries.
During his visit, he met with Christina L. Bloebaum, Ph.D., dean of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, along with other senior college leadership and students. The tour included the college's facilities and a visit to the 91福利 Airport, where the two sides discussed the university's programs and future plans in aviation and aerospace.
The visit aligned with Rep. Mathews' signature legislative effort: House Bill 292, which establishes the Ohio Defense and Space Commission to promote the defense and aerospace industries statewide.
The commission is charged with administering a Defense and Aerospace Industries Expansion Program, recruiting international business investment, supporting research and development, and studying policies to improve quality of life for service members and veterans. The Ohio House passed the bill unanimously in March; it now awaits action in the Ohio Senate.
Rep. Mathews represents House District 83, covering Hancock, Hardin and northern Logan counties. A U.S. Army Infantry Officer in the Ohio National Guard, he is an Iraq War veteran who serves as commander for HHC, 1-145th Armor Regiment. He holds a bachelor's degree from Cedarville University and a master's degree in executive leadership from Liberty University.
In addition to his work on HB 292, Mathews serves as vice chair of the House Veterans and Military Development Committee and sits on the Development, Technology and Innovation, and Natural Resources committees.
